Sights & SEANWICHES: A Coastal Classic Sandwich in Del Mar, San Diego

Updated: Aug 28

Del Mar, San Diego. A slice of coastal paradise where sun-kissed cliffs watch over the endless Pacific. Just beyond the lively surf sits a sandwich shop that is more than a lunch spot. Board & Brew is a Del Mar institution, serving great sandwiches for decades and carving out its place in California food culture.

From the moment I first walked in, this spot had me hooked. It was not just the sandwiches or the prime location near the 15th Street surf break. It was the vibe, the sense of history that hangs in the air. Surfboards line the walls, the smell of grilled chicken drifts through the room, and the place hums with anticipation. As a local, it did not take long for me to build a ritual: grab a sandwich, walk down to the shoreline, and watch the surfers carve up the waves. But the real magic of Board & Brew is how it ties you to the raw beauty of the coast.

One afternoon I skipped the easy routine and took a different path, trekking toward the jagged cliffs that line the ocean. Trading comfort for chaos, I found myself perched above crashing waves with a Board & Brew sandwich in hand. Nature and food collided in a way that made me feel alive, a perfect harmony of craft and wild.

Perched on the edge of the world, with the ocean stretching endlessly before me, I unwrapped my Baja Chicken sandwich. The flavors hit just right. Grilled chicken with that subtle smoky char, Jack cheese melting into perfection, and jalapeños bringing the perfect kick. Fresh shredded lettuce and tomato keep it grounded, but it’s that magical orange sauce that takes it to another level. Each bite is a slice of heaven, especially with the waves crashing below, as if the universe itself was in on the secret.

So when you find yourself in Del Mar, skip the obvious and take your sandwich somewhere that makes you stop and breathe. Find a quiet stretch of cliff, let the waves remind you how small we are, and savor it. Some meals go beyond taste. They become a memory, a story, a reason to pause.

There's nothing quite like the California coast and a Baja Chicken. This was a 10/10 sandwich experience.
